After graduating BA (Hons) in French and Spanish from the University of Ghana, Legon (1986), H.E. Margaret Ivy Amoakohene did a post-graduate diploma and an MPhil in Philosophy, both at the School of Communication Studies, Legon, before proceeding to do a PhD in Mass Communication at the University of Leicester, U.K.
As a lecturer at the Communication Studies, Mrs Amoakohene taught Public Relations, Quantitative Research Methods and Mass Communication at the graduate level and taught the same courses at the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
Among other positions she held while at the University of Ghana were: Senior Tutor, Mensah Sarbah Hall; Chairperson, Tutorial Board, Mensah Sarbah Hall; Member, University Residence Board; Member, Board of Faculty of Social Studies; Member, Academic Board, University of Ghana; and Treasurer, University Teachers' Association of Ghana.
Outside the University, Dr Amoakohene served as a member of the National Media Commission and on the Board of the Ghana News Agency, a member of the Bui Development Committee, the Boards of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and the National Film and Television Institute, as Honorary Secretary, and Vice-President, Institute of Public Relations and as a member of the editorial board of the Media Monitor, a publication sponsored by the National Media Commission.
Dr Amoakohene has participated in a wide variety of seminars, workshops and conferences, both nationally and internationally, where she presented papers on various aspects of communication, the environment, the media, public relations, politics, governance, and women and gender.
A native of Nsawkaw in the Brong Ahafo Region, Dr Margaret Ivy Amoakohene is married and has three children.
