Ambassaor Afare A. Donkor was born on 10th February, 1944 and completed his formal education at the University of Ghana, Legon, graduating with a BSc (Honours) Degree in Economics in 1968. Between 1968 and 1987, Ambassador Donkor worked with Barclays Bank, National Investment Bank and Merchant Bank (Ghana) Limited. In 1987, he left Merchant Bank to set up Consolidated Discount House which he ran as Managing Director. He also set up the Ghana Leasing Company and became its Chairman. Capitalizing on his immense expertise in banking and finance, Ambassador Donkor founded CAL Merchant Bank in 1989 and managed it until 1996. He was part of the committee which was tasked to set up the Ghana Stock Exchange and later became its Chairman. From 1996 until his appointment as Ambassador in 2002, he run his own financial consultancy called Sedgwick Consult. While still at CAL Merchant Bank, he helped set up discount houses in Nigeria and Zimbabwe. He has held the position of Chairman of several companies such as the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) and Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL)
Since his assumption of office in Beijing, Ambassador Afare Donkor has, with the support of his staff, pursued Ghana's economic interests in China to good effect. He was instrumental in negotiating favourable deals for Ghana in telecommunications and ICT development, improvement of mass transportation, road and highway construction, housing and equipment of sports infrastructure. His primary objective is to lift Ghana-China relations to higher levels.
