Hon. Dr. Charles Yaw Brempong-Yeboah
MP, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and NEPAD
Hon. Dr. Charles Yaw Brempong-Yeboah, MP, currently the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and NEPAD, was born on 5th May, 1954 in Asamang-Tamfoe in the Eastern Region of Ghana. He schooled there and later at Achimota Secondary School and on to the University of Ghana for this degree. He opted to pursue post Graduate studies in Japan in the expectation that this would open up an opportunity for him to learn a second language.
Dr. Brempong-Yeboah is naturally affable. It was not surprising therefore that in his student days in Japan, he was elected to lead the Aichi Foreign Student’s Association (AFSA) first as a Vice President and later as a President. His command of the Japanese language at the time endeared him to the normally shy Japanese citizenry, including the press.
On graduation with an MSc (1982) and a D. Agr. (1985) on Agriculture from the prestigious Nagoya University, he returned to Ghana in 1986 after having been designated “Minkan Taishi” (Nagoya City Ambassador at Large), to teach for seven consecutive years (1986-1993) in his alma mata, the University of Ghana, before moving on to work with the private sector for another seven years (1993-2000).
His latent political instincts took the better part of him in 1992 when the ban on political parties was lifted in Ghana by the PNDC, and he quietly joined the New Patriotic Party in his hometown constituency, assisting the people in all ways possible. According to him, it was just “desire to assist the people” that moved him into politics.
Since 2000, when he entered Parliament, he has been a member of several Parliamentary Select Committees, including, the Vice Chairmanship of Foreign Affairs Committee, the Constitutional, Legal and Judicial Committee, and the Government Assurances Committee.
Dr. Brempong-Yeboah was selected by H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor, President of the Republic to join his Government, first as a Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing (2003-April 2005); and subsequently, as Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Manpower, Youth and Employment (May 2005-July 2007).
Hon. Dr. Brempong-Yeboah has been privileged to lead various Ghana Government Delegations to several Conferences and Meetings abroad.
On his CV submitted to the Appointments Committee for his maiden vetting as a Deputy Minister in 2005, Hon. Brempong-Yeboah stated that he abhors cheating and deceit and has as one of his hobbies “ensuring that things are done right”.
Dr. Brempong-Yeboah is married with four children.
