Methodist University College

ESTABLISHMENT: The establishment of the Methodist University College Ghana was one of the Visions of the Methodist Church in Ghana and was mentioned by the then President of the Ghana Methodist conference Rt. Rev. Dr. Samuel Asante Antwi in his inaugural speech at the 36th Annual Conference of the Methodist Church Ghana held at Cape Coast in 1997.

Bringing the vision to reality, the Methodist University College Ghana was granted Accreditation by the Ghana Accreditation Board in August 2000 and in October 2002 got affiliated to the University of Ghana.  The University College with an Initial student population of 80 started academic work on 20th November 2000. It currently has a student population of 2830.

VISION: The vision of the University College is to promote academic excellence, spirituality, morality and service through teaching and research.

MISSION: To input knowledge and skills in disciplines relevant to national development within the context of General global development, and at the same time ensure an all-round of the Student mentally, physically and spiritually on the basis of Christian principles.

PROFILES OF ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF:

VERY REV. PROF. SAMUEL K. ADJEPONG (PRINCIPAL)

Principal

The Very Rev. Prof. Samuel Kwasi Adjepong, is an Academician, Administrator and an ordained Minister. He is a Physicist by training. He had both his first and second degrees at the University of Ghana, Legon and then continued to the University of Southampton, England, to obtain his P.hD.

He has taught as well as served in administrative positions in the University system in and outside Ghana for thirty-nine years. For ten years, he served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.

Very Rev. Prof. Adjepong is a Senior Associate of the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, a member of the American Physical Society and a member of the Ghana Science Association.

He has served as a member of a large number of Committees and Boards in and outside Ghana. He served as Chairman of the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals on three occasions, was Chairman of the Ghana Education Service Council and has also served as Chairman of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

He is a national award winner of the Order of the Volta (Companion) for his distinguish services in the Education and Public Sectors. He has also received two honorary doctorate degrees conferred on him by the University of Cape Coast and the University of Education, Winneba.

He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the African Virtual University, Chairman of the National Governing Council of the African Peer Review Mechanism and the Principal of the Methodist University College Ghana.

VERY REV. PROF. JOSHUAH N. KUDADJIE (VICE PRINCIPAL)

The Very Rev. Prof. Joshuah N. Kudadjie is an Academician, Administrator and an ordained Minister. He holds a BA Hons (Religion) from the University of Ghana, Legon and an MA (Theology) from the University of Cambridge, England.

He has for many years taught and also served in administrative positions in and outside Ghana. He was a lecturer at the Department for the study of religion at the University of Ghana, Legon, a visiting Scholar at the University of Puget Sound (1980), and the University of Rotterdam. He was the first 'Black' African visiting Professor to the University of South Africa (Unisa).

The very Rev. Prof. J. N. Kudadjie has a lot of experience in the field of Academia. He has taught and researched into areas such as African and Christian Ethics and Philosophy of Religion. He is a pioneer in research into and the teaching of African Traditional Ethics at the University Level and a founding member of the West African Association of Theological Institutions (WAATI). For many years he was the Secretary General of the Association and later became the Chairman.

Rev. Prof. Kudadjie has also worked as a civil servant in various capacities, including being a Parliamentary Reporter, Assistant Clerk of Parliament and Secretary to various Parliamentary Committees.

He is currently the resident Pastor of the Amasaman Methodist Church, in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra Region. He is a pioneer staff of the Methodist University College Ghana and is presently the Vice Principal.

MR. JUSTICE NII ARYEETEY (REGISTRAR)

Mr. Justice Nii Aryeetey is a trained Teacher, Academician and Administrator. He had his teacher training at Wesley College, Kumasi. He holds a B.A Hons (Geography with Archaeology) and an M.P.A both from the University of Ghana, Legon.

He has taught for twenty-five years and also served in administrative positions. He served as a Senor Assistant Registrar at the University of Cape Coast for seven years. He was the Administrative Secretary for the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission from 1992 to 1993 and moved on to become the Registrar of the University of Education Winneba from 1992 to 2005.

Mr. Aryeetey has had a wide range of experience working in the University system and has also attended quite a number of local and international conferences. He was at the general conference of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Belfast, UK, in August 2003 and the Association of Commonwealth Universities Conference on Human Resource Management held at the University of Stellembosch, South Africa in April 2004.

He is currently the Registrar of the Methodist University College Ghana.

FACULTIES AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES: MUCG runs both day-time and evening programmes. It currently has four Faculties, namely:

  1. Faculty of Business Administration
  2. Faculty of Social Studies
  3. Faculty of General Studies
  4. Faculty of Agriculture

Faculty of Business Administration: The Faculty runs the following programmes: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Human Resource Management and Marketing. These programmes of study lead to the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in the four areas of specialization.

Faculty of Social Studies: The Faculty offers the following programmes: B.Sc. Economics; B.A. Information Technology; B.Sc. Economics and Mathematics/Statistics and M.A. in Guidance and Counselling.

The following programmes will be run in the 2007/2008 academic year: B.SC. Mathematics and Statistics; M. Phil in Mathematics.

Faculty of General Studies: The Faculty will run the following programmes with effect from the 2007/2008 academic year: B.A. English Studies, B.A. Religious Studies and Ethics.

Besides, the Faculty offers a selected number of General Studies Service courses in English, French, Mathematics, Statistics, Religious Studies, Ethics, Logic, Behavioral Studies, Entrepreneurship and Computer Studies to support and enhance all degree programmes run by the various faculties.

Faculty of Agriculture: A new Faculty which commenced academic work in the 2006/2007 academic year. It runs Certificate programmes in Horticulture, Agro-Processing and AgriBusiness.

The Faculty will also offer Diploma and B.Sc. Agriculture programmes in the 2007/2008 academic year.

PROFESSIONAL COURSES: The Methodist University College Ghana offers tuition for Professional courses. Currently it offers tuition in the following professional programmes:

i.  CIM-UK (Chartered Institute of Marketing) Tuition is offered at the following levels:

    • Professional Post Graduate Diploma
    • Professional Diploma
    • Professional Certificate

ii. ICA (Institute of Chartered Accountants) 2

iii. GB- (GHANA) Intermediate and final.

MUSIC CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE: The center is open to all potential musicians, students, school pupils and all interested persons.

FACILITIES:

The laboratory has several piano keyboards connected to computers and earphones for group learning.

Candidates wishing to learn keyboard skill will read their music from both computer screens and sheet music.

The centre has a number of choral and instrumental ensembles that interested persons may join. They include;

LIBRARY: The Methodist University College Ghana has a very big Library which provides relevant and an evolving collection of resources to support teaching, learning and research in the University and the wider learning Community.

The Library is computerised to enable it carry out its functions quickly, accurately and systematically to enhance efficiency and effective information - delivery.

ACCOMMODATION: The Alpha Royal hostel of the University College was built by the Lay Movement of the Methodist Church Ghana. It accommodates 338 students but its accommodating capacity is 400.

Admission requirements:

Bachelor's degree programmes

WASS/SSS Certificate holders must obtain:

  1. Passes in core English, core Maths and core Science or Social Studies/Life Skills, plus
  2. Passes in any three elective subjects in the WAEC WASSCE/SSSCE.

The aggregate score for the core and elective subjects must not be more than 24.

Other applicants

Those with the following may also apply:

  1. HND
  2. DBS or Diploma from any recognized institution
  3. RSA Stage III
  4. Post-secondary teacher training certificate from a recognized institution

Master's Degree Programmes

i.   M. A. Guidance and counseling
ii.  M. Phil Guidance and counseling

The programme will be available to holders of any of the following qualifications: B.A. Psychology; B. Ed counseling, or their equivalents.

iii. M. Phil Mathematics

Candidates should have a good first degree in Mathematic or any other relevant subject.

MATURE APPLICANTS: Mature Students applying for admission who do not satisfy the above requirement must have reasonable education and working experience and should have attained a minimum age of 28 years.

ACCESS COURSE: An access course will be organised by the University College for candidates applying as mature students and an entrance examination conducted at the end of the access course to select candidates for admission.

LOCATION: The Methodist University College Ghana is a multi campus University College. Its main campus is spread on a thirty acre land located to the Southern end of the Wesley Grammar School Compound of Dansoman, Accra, a Satellite campus at Tema which runs an evening programme and a Faculty of Agriculture at Wenchi in the Brong Ahafo Region.
