Profile

Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Hassan attended the University of Damascus and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Languages and Literature in 1976. He was recruited into the Foreign Service the same year as an A5 Officer at the Middle East and Asia Bureau, where he served for a year.

In 1978, he was posted to the Ghana Embassy at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he served as First Secretary/Head of Chancery. He became Chargé d' Affaires at the same Embassy in 1980 and years later, served as Consul-General for the Ghana Consulate General at Jeddah.

At post Mr. Ahmed Hassan, has also served as Minister Counsellor at the Ghana Embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark (1996-1998), Minister Counsellor at Havana, Cuba (1998-2000) and Minister/Deputy Head of Mission, Tokyo (2002-2006). At base, he has functioned as Deputy Director of Passports (1994-1996), Personal Assistant to the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs (2000-2001) and Director of Middle East and Asia Bureau (2000-2002).

He is currently the Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

      CORE FUNCTIONS OF THE PROTOCOL BUREAU

Official protocol work is carried out at two levels- at the State Protocol level and at the Diplomatic Protocol level.

The discharge of Diplomatic Protocol duties is the responsibility of the Protocol Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the Chief of Protocol as the head. Its core functions include:

(a) Facilitating interactions between the government of Ghana and the Diplomatic Missions and International Organisations accred- ited to Ghana;

(b) Ensuring that members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps understand and comply with local laws and regulations;

(c) Administering the privileges and immunities to which the Diplomatic and Consular Corps are entitled;

(d) Advising Government and its functionaries, as well as the Diplomatic Corps on matters relating to protocol, ceremonies,
privileges and immunities;

(e) Administering formalities associated with the appointment of Heads of Diplomatic Missions and Consular posts in Ghana and abroad

(f) Developing and implementing Protocol policies and procedures, in line with Ghana Government policies and international practice;

(g) Advising Ghana Missions abroad on matters relating to Ghanaian Protocol and Diplomatic practice; and

(h) Facilitating the practical arrangements for international conferences held in Ghana, and advising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its conference commitments.
