Her Excellency Dr. (Mrs) Mokowa Blay Adu-Gyamfi was born on 10th September, 1942, in Sekondi in the Western Region of Ghana. She had her Primary education at Mmofraturo Boarding School, Kumasi from where she had admission into Wesley Girls' High School, the prestigious all female secondary school in Cape Coast. She then moved on to Aburi Girl's Secondary School to study advanced level science. She entered the University of Ghana Medical School in 1962 and qualified as a doctor in 1969. After completing her house job rotations at The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, she branched into Health Education/ Public Health.
From 1973 to 1975, Dr. Adu-Gyamfi embarked on her Post-Graduate Studies in Community Medicine at University of Glasgow and worked at various Venereal and Family Planning clinics. She returned to Ghana in 1975 and was based at Mamprobi (Ablekuma) Polyclinic until1982. She became the Specialist in charge of the Community based Polyclinic and the Ablekuma Health Committee.
She had further experience working at the Family and Community Medicine Faculty of the College of Medicine, King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia. From 1999 until her appointment, she was the Deputy Programme Manager of the National HIV/AIDS/STI Programme (NACP) of the Ghana Health Service. Her Excellency was actively involved in HIV prevention and treatment and Adolescent Reproductive Health. She was part of core groups that produced many training manuals.
H.E has attended many courses, seminars and conferences in Ghana and abroad in her career as a doctor. She has served on the Council of the University of Ghana and also on the Council of the College of Health Sciences for four years until her appointment as High Commissioner. She is married to Professor Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, a Consultant in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care and they have adult children and grandchildren. Hailing from a staunch political background, she is pleased to represent her country as High Commissioner.
Prior to her appointment as High Commissioner she was a committed Community Medicine Physician. She is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians and also a Founding Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians.
